Usefulness of the Word

I was chatting with my mentee a few days ago and the following conversation occurred:

Mentee: ...but sometimes the Bible just look like a storybook especially the old testament.
Me: It could be. That's why you need to attend Bible study for explanation of its effect on your life, for example, tell me the last one you read and what you think of it.
Mentee: I read Ecclesiastes. You know vanity upon vanity.
Me: Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon and one of it's purpose it's too show the utter fallacy of things that are earthly pursuits and to show that the final conclusion of the whole of life is to fear God, and keep His commandments. See Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.
Mentee: Seriously, I started thinking of all my goals. All are nothing but earthly ambitions.
Me: If your goals do not align with God's plan for your life, it will just be struggle all the way.
Mentee: Then how do I know which is God's plan for my life? Its just complicated.
Me: Ah. It's not complicated as long as you learn to sit with God and study His word, pray and be obedient to Him. It's really simple. Just be patient because you can't work with God without patience. Ephesians 1:16-19 says that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
Mentee: Ok, you are my teacher
Me: Not at all. The Holy Spirit is the teacher. He is the only that teaches and gives understanding. Without the Holy Spirit, the Bible will become ordinary letter but it's the Spirit that gives life. 2Co 3:6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Are you in the same position as my mentoree?

 You have to realise that working with God takes trust and faith in Him and knowing that it is not going to be by your strength because you human, prone to numerous errors but by total reliance on God through His Holy Spirit for help and guidance. Even when you fail or disappoint God, do not worry. Apologise, repent and move on with Him. As long as there is genuine effort to not repeat it. ‘Your strength will not get my temple (your life is His temple not yours) rebuilt. Your power will not do it either. Only the power of my Spirit will do it,’ says the Lord who rules over all'.

This is the last days of the year and appropriate time to do a stocktaking of the year to know if indeed you have succeeded or not. What goals did you set at the beginning of the year? To what extent did you get at fulfilling these goals? Whether you succeeded or not or did you get to achieve a considerable level or not? What really motivated you or distracted you during the course of the tear? Dividing your goals between spiritual or material goals, which one did you succeed at, and will you say there was or is a relationship between the two? Is each of the two mutually exclusive? In real sense of it, neither is mutually exclusive. This is my witty God...Could you have imagined it?

Way of the righteous

Are you righteous? What makes a person righteous? Man has always strived to be righteous. To attain this, we strive to be religious; strive to be good; strive to do right; etc. However, man is inherently evil from the womb. You do not need to teach a child to be selfish, to lie, or to do anything bad. You have to teach a child how to be good. (A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. - Proverbs 29:15 ) That is why the Lord Jesus said no one is good except God. So, are we doomed? Who Do You Really Seek?

Why are you doing what you are doing? Is it for the financial reward or for the love of it? Reward is the opium or energy that propels us to desire or go for or engage in any activity. What are you doing? What is your expected reward? Is it instant reward you are after or time tested reward? For every endeavour, there is a fundamental reward we are all after with a subset of broken down or auxiliary reward. Whatever the reward that drives us in all our endeavours, it is known throughtout the ages that fleeting or instant reward is fraught with high risk and certainly not lasting. However, a time-tested reward outlook is or will be borne out of patience which is a product of proven series of experience. This type of reward is surely more lasting and could actually last across generations. Who do you belong to and why that matters?

What have we that we were not given? What have you that you were not given? 1 Cor 4:7 - "For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive?... " This is really a true saying. Do you have any part to play in your existence? Did you have any part to play at deciding your gender - male or female? Job 2:10 says "For the life of every living thing is in his hand, and the breath of every human being." (NLT) Since non of us have, why do we still behave as if we own and control everything including our own very lives. We ought to fully internalise this and realise this and allow the Lord to guide and direct our lives, our likes and dislikes, our emotions, our temperament, our hopes and aspirations and how we go about achieving these hopes and aspirations. We all have these aspirations in life but let the God that put these aspirations there guide and direct its actualisation. For, for His pleasure alone should we exist and live.
